Board Appoints Richard Carranza as Next Superintendent for SFUSD
(San Francisco) April 24, 2012 – In a unanimous vote, the San Francisco Board of Education has selected Richard Carranza to serve as the next superintendent for San Francisco public schools upon Superintendent Carlos Garcia’s retirement in July 2012.
“Hiring the superintendent is the most important decision we can make as a school board,” said Board President Norman Yee. “Deputy Superintendent Carranza has already brought much to our district as an instructional leader, community builder, and father of two SFUSD students. We are confident that he will continue the progress of the past five years without breaking stride.”
Richard Carranza is SFUSD’s Deputy Superintendent of Instruction, Innovation and Social Justice and has served in this role since 2009. Carranza currently oversees the district’s pre-K through 12 school area teams as well as the district’s student and family support services and academic departments. He is responsible for implementing the SFUSD strategic plan to achieve more equitable educational results for all students.
Prior to joining the district Carranza was Northwest Region Superintendent for the Clark County School District in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he oversaw 60 schools and over 58,000 students. He has also served as a high school principal and as a teacher of bilingual social studies and music in Arizona and Nevada.
Carranza, who was joined by his wife, brother and two children at tonight’s school board meeting, pledged to stay focused on what children most need to learn and grow.
“When I began my career, I began as a teacher. My focus will continue to be that of a teacher,” said Richard Carranza. “I hope to continue the work the board and our superintendent have started. San Francisco never settles for the status quo and neither will I.”
