Music Album Benefits School Alliance

Burning House Records is proud to present: ‘Can I Borrow This? Vol. 1’ – a compilation of the label’s favorite artists, each covering each other’s songs, all in the name of raising funds for the San Francisco School Alliance.

Label owner and manager, Casey Shafer was moved to put the compilation together after reading an article about the state of schools in the Bay Area. “With the continuous cuts to our school districts, I wanted to raise some awareness, as well as some money, to help,” he explains. “The School Alliance understands that strong schools build strong communities.”

Shafer enlisted the help of Tumbledown (featuring MxPx frontman Mike Herrera), The Young Dudes (formerly of alt-country favorites Limbeck), Sam Means (formerly of Arizona indie-pop quintet, The Format), as well as Burning House artists, Jarrod Gorbel, Mansions and The Holy Rolling Empire and asked them all to cover each other’s songs.  For a donation, you can download the project here or purchase at Itunes and Amazon.

The track listing is as follows:

Tumbledown, “Silver Things” (originally by Limbeck)
Mansions, “Miserable Without You” (originally by Jarrod Gorbel)
Jarrod Gorbel, “She Doesn’t Get It” (originally by The Format)
The Young Dudes, “Late Again” (originally by MxPx)
Sam Means, “Big Drag” (originally by Limbeck)
The Holy Rolling Empire, “OMG” (originally by Mansions)

Mike Herrera explains why he was so enthusiastic about Tumbledown’s song choice: “I really dig Limbeck – they take you places,” he says. “They carry you along for the ride – it’s good traveling music.”

Mansion’s Christopher Browder was keen to cover Jarrod Gorbel’s “Miserable Without You” as well: “When we toured with Jarrod at the beginning of 2011, he had just released this song, and it was the one that always struck me the most in his set,” he says. “It has some great one-liners, and there’s a confidence and vulnerability about it that I really like.”

‘Can I Borrow This? Vol. 1’ is a vibrant, touching collection that has something for any discerning music fan, from the sweet melancholy of Sam Means, through Holy Rolling Empire’s mind-bending, psychedelia-infused take on Mansions’ balladry, all the way up to the delicate sensibilities and laid-bare humanity of Jarrod Gorbel.

All proceeds from “Burning House Records Presents: Can I Borrow This? Vol. 1’ will benefit the SFSA as they develop critical partnerships, raise money and advocate so that each student in San Francisco’s public schools has access to quality education and is able to graduate, college and career ready.
