Change starts at the top – and at the bottom. The San Francisco school district has new leadership. The voters have spoken with a significant investment of their tax dollars. And the School Alliance has formed to provide vital support throughout the community. The key elements for a significant transformation are in place.
With recently appointed school superintendent Carlos Garcia and the new SFUSD leadership team, a culture of results, creativity, transparency and trust is taking hold to bring about the changes necessary to create learning for the 21st century in San Francisco’s schools.
For the first time in more than three decades, San Francisco’s public schools are experiencing a reversal in the trend of downward enrollment, especially at pre-school programs and elementary schools across the city.
With the passage of a 20-year $600 million Parcel Tax in June 2008, San Franciscans have demonstrated a real commitment to make major investments in our teachers and curriculum, technology and innovation at our 100 schools and 30 early childhood learning centers.
San Francisco has a number of strong, high-performing schools – some of which are among the highest performing public schools in the country. Newsweek’s national ranking of “America’s Best High Schools” (2008) named four SFUSD high schools among the top 5% in the country. What we need is to extend these examples of excellence consistently across our City so that every school is as good as the next.
