Why can’t school be engaging all the time? Too often, we are educating our children for a world that no longer exists. Will an entire generation of students fail to make the grade in the global economy because they can’t think their way through abstract problems, work in teams, distinguish good information from bad, or speak a language other than English? The 21st Century Learning Initiative is designed to prepare all of our students to succeed in an interconnected, fast-changing world.
What if we could create a seamless network of school, afterschool programs, and city-community partnerships to turn our entire city into a classroom? This new initiative brings together a wide coalition of community and civic leaders so that our students can learn in diverse, engaging, and intentionally connected environments all day, every day. The School Alliance, the City and the new district leadership team has received a three-year grant, “A New Day for Learning” from the CS Mott Foundation, making ours just one of two cities in the nation selected to create this city-wide network and implement this important work.
