It all starts with leadership. Research clearly shows that the most essential element for any high-performing school is a strong, capable principal. The San Francisco School Alliance/SFUSD Leadership for Equity Initiative recruits and develops the next generation of talented leaders, while providing targeted professional development and coaching for existing school leaders. The Alliance, along with several expert partners, helped SFUSD establish a set of core competencies and individual plans for school leaders that are guiding best practices across the schools. The Leadership for Equity Initiative is supporting every one of San Francisco’s 100 schools and 30 early childhood learning centers, with a special focus given to our highest-poverty, highest needs schools. The School Alliance has raised over $2 million to launch this Initiative from several leading companies such as Wells Fargo Bank and local foundations who share our commitment to world-class public education.
A unique pilot is underway with principals from some the city’s highest-poverty, most diverse elementary schools. The School Alliance and district leadership are working with Partners in School Innovation to help improve six low-income schools with high percentages of children who are English-Language Learners.
